Rio Hondo edged SBCC 2-1 in a nonconference men’s soccer match on Tuesday in Whittier, dropping the Vaqueros to 0-4-1.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Santa Barbara tied the game in the 52nd minute when Memo Gonzalez worked hard to win the ball in the penalty area and then set up Melvin Yekeh’s goal. The Roadrunners (8-1-2) went ahead 2-1 in the 75th minute on what SBCC coach John Sisterson called “a defensive error.”
“It was a very hot day and we played much better in the second half,” said Sisterson. “We could have gone up 2-1 or 3-1 right after we scored. Then our heads went down when they scored again.”
SBCC will play its second home match on Friday against Taft at 7 p.m.
