BAKERSFIELD – Two first half goals by UCSB held up as the Gauchos beat Cal State Bakersfield, 2-0, in women’s soccer on Thursday evening on the Main Soccer Field in Bakersfield. The win moves the Gauchos’ record to 3-4-1 for the season while the Roadrunners dropped to 4-5-0. The home loss was just the second of the season for CSUB.
Junior midfielder Jacqui Simon got the Gauchos started in the 27th minute when she one-touched a cross from junior forward Kylie McDonald into the back of the net for her second score of the season.
A little over 11 minutes later a pair of freshmen teamed-up for UCSB. Midfielder Erin Ortega played a through ball to forward Victoria Thomas who outran the Roadrunner defense and beat CSUB goalkeeper Kym Gause to the far post. The goal was the first of Thomas’s career.
UCSB outshot the Roadrunners 16-8. The Gauchos also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks and a 14-10 edge in fouls. Tammy Lenham completed her second shutout of the season with four saves. Gause finished with five saves for the `Runners.
Santa Barbara, which has played seven of its eight games away from home, will return to Meredith Field at Harder Stadium for seven of its final 11 contests. On Friday, Sept. 25 the Gauchos host Arizona at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 27 they host powerful UCLA in a 4:00 p.m. match. The UCSB=UCLA contest will be followed by a match-up of the Gaucho men’s team against UC Irvine.
