Williamsburg, Va. – The UCSB women’s soccer team scored a goal in each half and goalkeeper Tammy Lenham recorded her first shutout of the season as the Gauchos defeated 22nd-ranked William and Mary, 2-0. The game was the first for both teams at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Marriott Tribe Invitational. The win was the 101st of head coach Paul Stumpf’s career, a new school record.
Stumpf passed former head coach Tad Bobak who recorded 100 during his tenure from 1987 through 1994.
The Gauchos (2-3-1) went on the attack late in the first half. After a UCSB corner kick was initially cleared, the ball found the foot of junior midfielder Jacqui Simon, who sent the ball back in the box from the right side. The ball found a cutting Alissa Sanchez who finished with her right foot, left of the Tribe goalkeeper, junior Grace Barnard. With the goal in the 32nd minute, the Gauchos would take a 1-0 lead into the half. It was Sanchez’s first goal of the season.
Just six minutes into the second stanza, the Gauchos would add onto their lead off a free kick. After a foul by William and Mary (3-2), UCSB had a free kick from about 19 yards out. Simon would take the kick for the Gauchos, kicking it right of the Tribe’s wall and curving into the goal just inside the left post, giving Santa Barbara the 2-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Tammy Lenham, making her second start of the season, had three saves and went the distance for her first shutout of the season. In all, UCSB outshot Willam and Mary 9-5. The Gauchos had seven shots on goal as compared to just three for the Tribe.
The game was the fourth in six that Santa Barbara has played against top-25 opponents. In addition to William and Mary, the Gauchos have also played Illinois, Michigan State, and Santa Clara.
The Fairfield Inn and Suites Marriott Tribe Invitational continues on Friday, September 11 with a doubleheader at Albert-Daly Field. The first match between UCSB and George Mason will begin at 1 p.m. (PST), with the William and Mary vs. Coastal Carolina match scheduled to begin at 4 p.m (PST).
In addition to the match against George Mason, the Gauchos will remain on the road to play at Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 17. They will return home to host Arizona on Friday, Sept. 25 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Kick-off is 7:00 p.m.
