Gaucho baseball to host Blood Drive on Friday

The UCSB baseball team will take part in its annual blood drive this Friday at the Tri-Counties Blood Bank in Santa Barbara. The blood bank is located at 902 Laguna Street, between Canon Perdido and Carrillo.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and will last all day.

“Giving blood donations as a team really builds character and camaraderie with our student-athletes,” UCSB head coach Bob Brontsema said. “It gives our players a glimpse of the bigger picture in helping save lives. This year we would like to invite the community to join us. We will be donating downtown all day Friday.”

The Gauchos return several top players for the 2010 team, including Mario Hollands and Matt Valaika, both of whom were drafted in June’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Outfielder Mark Haddow, named the No. 2 prospect from the summer Jayhawk League will also be back. UCSB will also welcome several top newcomers, including left-handed pitcher Kevin Gelinas, who was tabbed the No. 1 prospect from the California Collegiate League, one of the nation’s top summer leagues.

And, don’t forget that the baseball team is holding its 18th Annual Caesar Uyesaka Memorial Golf Tournament soon at the exclusive Montecito Country Club. UCSB Athletics is now accepting applications for the tournament, held Thursday, Oct. 8.

This annual tournament helps raise funds for the UCSB baseball program, one that just recently set a school record by having nine players chosen in Major League Baseball’s June amateur draft. The price includes 18 holes of golf at the pristine Montecito Country Club as well as lunch and dinner.

The Montecito Country Club is an exclusive members-only course and this could be the only chance for non-members to play the beautiful course in the foothills of Santa Barbara overlooking the ocean.

Various contests will be held during the day, including a Hole In One challenge with the winner taking home a car from Toyota of Santa Barbara, the $2,500 Ramada Putting Challenge, a chance to win $10,000 and many more great prizes.
