SBCC freshman Kaitlyn Gatena turned in a 3-over-par 75 on Friday, leading the Vaqueros to fifth place after one round of the Desert Classic women’s golf tournament at Indian Canyon in Palm Springs.
Asaka Sim shot 79 and Jenna Boyle tallied 83 for Santa Barbara, which totaled 324 strokes. Sacramento City grabbed the first-round lead in the 13-school event at 298.
“We didn’t play super today,” noted SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “This shows us what the competition is like and it’s stiff. We need to build some consistency.”
The final round will be played Saturday.
