After Wednesday’s blowout of Thousand Oaks, Dos Pueblos water polo coach Chris Parrish said that his fourth-ranked Chargers were hoping to meet No. 3 Loyola in the finals of the weekend;s Riverside Poly Tournament.
DP did just that, and the two top-tier squads played an epic championship match, playing two 3-minute overtimes and two 3-minute sudden death overtimes before the Cubs scored for a 13-12 decision and the title. It was the third time that the Chargers have finished as runner-up in the 64-team tourney.
Derek Shoemaker and Chase Racich each scored four goals in the match for DP, which led 9-5 at halftime.
“Brady Moore kept hope alive with huge saves through the first three overtimes and finish with a total of 13 saves in game,” said Parrish.
Earlier in the day, the Chargers defeated Montebello, the top-ranked team in Division III, by a score of 10-4. Moore had 11 saves in the match while Shoemaker and Kevin Cappon each had three goals.
San Marcos also went 1-1 on Saturday, defeating Sunny Hills 15-9 before falling to Redlands East Valley 13-5.
Travis Johnson scored seven goals against Sunny Hills while Travis Frohlich added five and Chris Bebb had a whopping 19 saves. The Royals (6-6) led 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter but pulled away in the final period.
Johnson and Frohlich each had a pair of goals against Redlands East Valley.
“In both tournaments we’ve played this year we’ve struggled in the final game of the tournament. Travis drew eight ejections and we had 10 man up situations but were only able to capitalize on two of them,” said coach Jeff Ashton.
