The Santa Barbara High boys water polo team played to matches on Thursday to open up the South Coast Tournament, getting past Huntington Beach 4-3 in the opener before falling to Div. I No. I Newport Harbor 13-3.
The Dons continue play on Friday with a 6 p.m. rematch against Servite, which the Dons beat last Friday10-9.
Against the Sailors – the No. 1 team in the country according to Dons head coach Mark Walsh – Ken Myers scored twice and Alec Linz recorded his first varsity goal.
Santa Barbara stayed within two goals of Newport Harbor until a 9-1 run that started in the second quarter put the game out of reach.
Myers, Enzo Wolfe, Nick Johnson and Evan Schu gave the Dons a 4-0 lead over Huntington Beach in the first game. Santa Barbara’s defense was threatening the shutout before three late goals from Huntington. Mark Davis added two assists and two steals in that match.
