Usually, Dos Pueblos’ Lagoon Meet awards just the winners from each age group. This year, however, coach Leslie Wiggins-Roth changed the format to make it a team competition in which each squad’s top-nine finishers are scored.
DP beat Ventura on Wednesday in the first Channel league meet, but the Cougars had just enough depth to prevail in Saturday’s format, edging the Chargers 138-139. Carpinteria was fifth at 414.
Powerhouse Cabrillo thoroughly dominated the boys side of the competition with a tally of 88. Ventura was second with 145 and DP was third at 254. Carpinteria finished fifth.
Ventura’s Hanna Kirkegaard won the girls race with a lightning-fast mark of 19:25. DP’s Kelly Kosmo, who won the Channel League race on Wednesday, was third at 19:45. Wiggins-Roth said that the race of the day went to sophomore Lauren Guthrie, who went from fifth to third on the Charger depth chart with a time of 20:27 — 38 seconds faster than she ran at DP on Wednesday.
As he did on Wednesday, DP’s Sergey Sushchikh won the boys race, this time clocking in at 15:48. Cabrillo clumped together in impressive fashion however, with runners in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 13th spots.
Charger freshman Bryan Fernandez was 15th overall and second for the Chargers, improving on Wednesday’s time by a whopping 1:09 with a mark of 16:53.
Wiggins-Roth added that Jacob Bartholomew, Ben York, and Sam Sarmiento really embraced the idea of team today by running and finishing in a tight pack.
