LOMPOC — When Zack Boytis and his fellow Dos Pueblos seniors were playing freshman football, they lost to Lompoc 70-0 at Huyck Stadium.
Boytis and his classmates on the team officially got the last laugh on Friday, demolishing the Braves 49-6 on the very same field.
The quarterback threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns on the night, while Anthony Houston led the rushing attack with 162 yards on 17 carries.
Coach Jeff Uyesaka had mentioned at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table luncheon that his team’s offense has been a little slower to develop than the defense early in the season. While the defense was a strong as ever on Friday, accounting for two touchdowns of its own, the offense looked like it has begun to catch up.
“I felt really good tonight. The offense made a really big jump from last week,” said Boytis, who threw some pinpoint deep passes on the night.
Cory Micheel caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Boytis in the second quarter, and also went a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points as the team’s kicker.
“I wish Lompoc all the best. This was real nice for us, because we’re rarely on the upside of these games,” said Uyesaka.
The Braves (0-3), who have been an incredibly tough opponent for South County teams throughout the years, have not won a regular-season game since beating the Chargers 31-17 on September 26th of last year.
A Cody Bidlow sack killed Lompoc’s first drive of the night, and DP (2-1) promptly marched 71-yards down the field, scoring on 30-yard strike to Houston streaking down the sideline. Three plays later, Brandon Tangel intercepted a pass by Lompoc’s Ryan Bower and returned it 22 yards for the score.
Boytis threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Harris with 7:38 left in the half, then added the 15-yarder to Micheel before Lompoc mustered its only points of the night as Jake Morehart caught a 40-yard TD pass from Bower with 1:51 to go.
The Braves recovered a dribbling onsides kick to start the second half but couldn’t produce a drive. DP responded when Boytis, backed up to his own 1-yard line on 3rd and 14, threw a beautiful 37-yard completion to Eric Arroyo to keep possession. Houston broke free and turned on the jets three plays later, burning the Lompoc secondary for a 61-yard scoring run to put the visitors up 35-6.
Three plays after that, Bower was attempting to hand off to Marcell Blow but Charger defender Jacob Thompson literally stole the ball from Bower’s hands and took off 40 yards for a touchdown.
Josh Bartley found the end zone on a 16-yard run with eight minutes to go in the game, ending the night’s scoring. Bartley racked up 52 yards on just four carries, while Arroyo had 108 yards on four catches.
After the game, assistant coach Nate Mendoza, who is also the DP baseball coach, got a Gatorade dunking for being a former player and coach for the Braves.
Dos Pueblos heads to Santa Maria next week to face Righetti.
