A day after opening their season with a 14-2 loss to Villanova, Cate suffered its second straight loss to Santa Ynez 9-1 on Wednesday in the Rams’ first home game of the year.
Cate started tough against the Pirates but couldn’t hang on, dropping the non-league contest.
Junior Cameron Whiting led the offensive action for Cate by scoring its single goal. Missed shots and missed passes in front of the goal were simply too much to overcome on the offensive side, while ejections on the defensive end led to costly goals.
Although the Rams had some improvements in offensive mobility and communication, the team’s inexperience was exposed by the more disciplined Pirates.
Cate plays again next Wednesday in Oxnard against Channel Islands at 3:15.
Cate 2 Villanova 14
After losing 9 of the 13 varsity players from last year’s squad, Cate’s varsity water polo team had a rough start to the season, falling to Villanova 14-2 in Ojai. The two goals were scored by senior captain Conrad Kurth and junior Brian Warren. Rusty after a week’s worth of camping and only one day of practice to prepare, the Rams were handily beat on both sides of the pool. With much room to improve, Cate returns Wednesday for the first home game of the season against Santa Ynez at 3 pm.
