The 12th edition of the Carpinteria Triathlon is set to take place this Sunday in the quaint seaside town.
There will be two courses — a sprint course and a more grueling Olympic course. Both will feature competitors of all ages.
The Olympic course will include a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run, while the shorter sprint course will have a 500-meter swim, a 15-kilometer bike, and a 5-kilometer run.
Roughly 1,000 competitors are expected to take part in the event, with the athletes being divided up in age divisions and groups being started every seven minutes.
SWIM COURSE ** BIKE COURSE ** RUN COURSE
Rowena Spence will be back to defend her 2008 women’s title on the sprint course, while neither Olympic champion, Leroy Thomas and Drea McLarty, nor men’s sprint champ Josh Spiker, will compete.
The top times for the Olympic course are expected to be just over two hours for the men and two and a half hours for the women. The sprint course winners usually clock in at around 55 minutes for the men and just over an hour for the women.
For the long course, competitors will start at Carpinteria State Beach for the swimming leg. Once finished, they will begin the bike portion, which will travel southeast to State Hwy 150, then back west on Foothill Road towards Santa Barbara, finally turning back in the direction of Carpinteria. A smaller loop is completed on foot in the running section of the race.
