Cards start strong, then fall to Oak’s trees

As will be the case in most of Bishop Diego’s Tri-Valley League girls volleyball team matches this season, the Cardinals lacked size and experience on Thursday at Oak Park.

Community West Bank“We’ve got a kind of short squad. We’re very talented, but lets face it… you can’t coach height,” said coach Joe Reiken.

Starting four sophomores and a freshman, the Cardinals hung with the Eagles early on in the first set but eventually fell 25-17, 25-12, 25-15.

“We got off to a fabulous start. It was 12-12 in the first game and we had high energy and output from everyone. And then we were done,” said Reiken. “Oak Park was very tall and fast.”

The Cardinals (1-2, 0-1 TVL) play in the Carpinteria Tournament on Saturday, and Reiken expects his team to have a good showing.
