There are two Santa Barbara football players who are now a part of the NFL, Alex Mack and Chris Gocong.
Former San Marcos Royal Alex Mack recently reached the NFL when he was selected 21st overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns as a center.
Mack excelled on both the offensive and defensive line for the San Marcos High football team and was named MVP of the team his senior season. He was also recognized the Channel League’s Co-Most-Valuable-Player on defense and earned All-CIF recognition twice.
Mack attended UC Berkeley on scholarship and was awarded the Draddy Trophy as the top scholar-athlete in college football. He was the first Pac-10 player to ever win the “academic Heisman.”
Chris Gocong attended Carpinteria High School where he was both quarterback and linebacker for his football team. During his high school years he as awarded the title of All-Tri-Valley-League linebacker twice and was All-CIF his senior year.
Gocong later went on to become one of college football’s most prolific sack artists with a record of 42 sacks in a 41-game career at Cal Poly.
In 2006, he was drafted in the third round by the Phildelphia Eagles as a linebacker and defensive end.
He is in his third season with the Eagles and is a starting outside linebacker for the second straight year.
