Jenn Waddill recorded eight kills and hit .750 on Friday while Jessica Tune piled up eight kills in the third set, leading the SBCC women’s volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of Riverside at the Pasadena Tournament. Earlier Friday, the host Lancers topped the Vaqueros (1-1) in their season opener 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.
Waddill, a 6-1 middle blocker from San Marcos High, dominated the middle in the Riverside match, thanks to the strong setting of Kelsey Soos, a freshman from Santa Ynez High. Maria Mayer had eight kills in the first set and Tune served nine straight points in the final set, stretching the lead to 19-10.
Mayer had eight kills and two blocks in the Pasadena match.
“Against Pasadena, we had first-game jitters and we looked like a young team on serve-receive,” said coach Ed Gover. “We played great in the second match. Case Jenkins, a freshman from Hawaii, really stepped it up at the libero position and made a big difference.”
SBCC will play its next six matches at home, starting Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. against Gavilan.
