Danny Rodriguez found the net from 25 yards out just 35 seconds into Friday’s season-opening men’s soccer game but SBCC couldn’t sustain the momentum in a 2-1 loss at Sequoias. Temperatures were in the low 90s in Visalia.
Rodriguez, a sophomore midfielder, picked up two yellow cards and was ejected in the 35th minute, forcing the Vaqueros to play a man down for the final 55 minutes.
“We lost concentration after 15 or 20 minutes,” said coach John Sisterson. “Then we got sloppy in the second half and lost our composure.”
Sequoias tied the game in the second half on a 40-yard looping shot over the keeper and a defensive breakdown by SBCC led to the second score.
“We defended poorly on their second goal,” said Sisterson. “We tried to catch them offside and it didn’t work. Overall, it wasn’t a very good performance.”
The Vaqueros return to action on Sept. 4 when they take on Santa Ana at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Mt. SAC Tournament in Walnut.
