Daniel Nyugen and Spencer Simon are still in the hunt for a junior tennis USTA Hardcourt National Championship this week in Kalamazoo, Washington, and Lauren Stratman is in San Diego vying for a girls national title.
Nguyen, a Santa Barbara High graduate who is currently playing at USC, and partner JT Sundling have defended their No. 1 seed in the boys 18s well so far, winning two matches in straight sets to reach the Round of 16.
Spencer Simon, seeded 12th in the boys 16s singles, survived a stiff test in the 3rd round on Tuesday, overcoming Michael Guzman 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5. On Wednesday, Simon is matched up against unseeded Michael Redlicki.

Chase Melton, reigning Channel League singles champion, defeated Trevor Horstmann in the boys 18s back draw after losing his first-round match in the main draw. Nguyen was also sent to the back draw in singles after a first-round loss. There, the 32nd seed won a match 6-4, 6-2 but fell in the next round to Breon Badger 6-2, 6-1.
Closer to home, Stratman is competing in the girls 16s at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The soon-to-be Dos Pueblos sophomore, who won the Channel League singles championship as a freshman, won her first-round match 7-5, 6-3 over Madison Rhyner but fell in the second round to be placed in the back draw.
In doubles, Stratman and partner Savannah Ware, of Thousand Oaks, are into the round of 32 with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory in a second-round match after a first-round bye. The unseeded duo will face top-seeded Kyle McPhillips and Chanelle Van Nguyen, from Willoughby, OH and Coconut Grove, FL, respectively, in the next round.
