It’s Dahlz’s Day

Winner John DahlzSan Francisco’s John Dahlz championed the Santa Barbara Triathlon’s long course in 2 hours, 53 minutes and two seconds on Saturday to lead a handful of competitors that eclipsed the three-hour marker.

Dahlz, 25, excelled in the swim and bike sections and built a healthy lead going into the run. He needed it, as second-place finisher Patrick Baldwin, 33, took back over six minutes by scorching the 10-mile run in just under 57 minutes. Baldwin’s total time was 2:54.39.

Nine hundred people attacked the 1-mile swim, 34-mile bike and 10-mile endurance race, which begun and ended at the Cabrillo Bath House on East Beach. Once competitors completed the ocean swim, the bike course stretched all the way to Highway 150 in Carpinteria and then backtracked along Foothill, Toro Canyon and East Valley Roads before winding back down towards the Bath House.

The run headed west along the waterfront, past the harbor, up Shoreline Drive, over to Mesa Lane and turned around on Borton Drive. Race conditions were unusual for August, as a light rain fell at times with a high cloud cover throughout.
