Club West Youth Track member Nicholas Scarvelis placed 3rd in the Shot Put competition at the World Youth Trials in Ypsilanti, Michigan this past Tuesday. His top throw was 59′ 7″. The Youth Trials is a qualifier to select the nation’s top 16 and 17 year old track and field athletes to compete against the world in Bressanone, Italy later this summer. Scarvelis also took 6th place in the Discus with a throw of 165′-1″.
The USA Youth Track and Field Championships were also held in Ypsilanti, and Club West Youth Track member Stamatia Scarvelis placed 8th overall in the Youth Girls Pentathlon, which consists of the 100M Hurdles, Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump and 800M Run. Scarvelis produced a final score of 2419 points against a field of Youth Girls national qualifiers.
At the USATF Junior Olympics Region 15 Championships held this past weekend at Cerritos College in Los Angeles, Hannah McDaniel jumped extremely well against a strong field and placed 2nd in the Intermediate Girls High Jump competition with a jump of 5’ 4”. As a result, Hannah moves on to the Junior Olympics National Championships for the 2nd year out of the past three years. The Junior Olympics National Championships will be held in Greensboro, N.C.from July 28 to August 2, 2009. Niema Poindexter also jumped well in the Youth Girls Triple Jump, finishing 5th and narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Junior Olympics National Championships.
