Construction is now underway for the new Santa Barbara City College Luria Conference and Press Center at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium. The new 971 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will include two conference rooms, coaches’ box, an announcer’s booth, and universal viewing areas as well as new paving and landscaping. The estimated completion date is December 2009.
The former SBCC Press Box, which was constructed in the 1930s shortly after the completion of LaPlaya Stadium, was demolished earlier this spring.
“Our new center will give the college much needed conference room space and provide a focal point for the news media, coaches and dignitaries who support the SBCC Athletic Program,” said SBCC Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban. “Our donors have been extremely generous in their support, and we extend a special thanks to the Luria Family Foundation for its lead gift which got the fundraising momentum started for the facility.”
Other donors to the SBCC Conference and Press Center include: Tim and Marcia Tremblay, Chad and Ginni Dreier, Jack and Paulette Callahan, The Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable, Mark and Valerie Maldonado, Nick and Kathy Zwick, and David and Louise Borgatello.
Santa Barbara City College has a varied and accomplished program of men’s and women’s sports. In the Western State Conference, SBCC students participate in 17 sports with nearly 400 Vaquero athletes competing each year.
