Peterson, Coffin contain WSA Prime

Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson and Parker Coffin surfed to titles at the WSA Prime Championships on Sunday at the Oceanside Harbor North Jetty, with Peterson winning in the girls-16s and Coffin in the boys-14s.

Peterson beat out Lani Doherty in the 16s final with a two-wave score of 15.17. Peterson also competed in the girls-18 division, where she advanced through two heats before falling to nemesis Courtney Conlogue in the final by the slim margin of 15.00 to 14.87.

Peterson called it a “nail-biter buzzer-beater heat” with Conlogue pulling out an 8.32 at the end to best Peterson’s 8.15.

Coffin came through with his highest-scoring heat of the contest (he also surfed in the boys-16s) in the 14s final, topping Kanoa Igarashi’s 14.93 with a 16.50.

Local boy Patrick Curren also surfed the event, falling in the second round of the boys-14s.

The event is a season-ending invitation only contest that is sanctioned by Surfing America, the organization responsible for sending the U.S. Surf Team to the ISA Junior World Surfing Championships.

Both Peterson and Coffin used the contest as a warm-up for the bigger fish, the NSSA National Championships later this month.
