The 72nd edition of Santa Barbara’s longest running sports festival, Semana Nautica, is fast approaching, with events beginning on Wednesday, July 1 and running until Sunday, July 12.
A vast array of popular summer sporting competitions fall under the Semana Nautica umbrella, including the 15k run, the 73rd Santa Barbara Tennis Open and the Krazy Kardboard Kayak Race.
There are two new events to this year’s program, including 3, 6, and 12 mile standup paddleboard races on Saturday, July 11 and PresidioSports.com’s own addition is the Santa Barbara Beach Soccer Summer Slam, which is currently accepting registration from teams in a variety of age groups.
It’s not just sporting events that are associated with Semana Nautica, as an art show, the 4th of July Parade and a tug-of-war competition are included in the festivities.
Also included are several swimming events. The annual Semana Nautica swim meet at Los Banos pool is set for 4th of July weekend while the open-water swims are spread out throughout the two-week festival. A one-mile ocean swim is first up on July 4th, the 3-mile is on the 5th and the 6-mile swim, which stretches from Goleta Beach to Hendry’s, takes place on July 12.
There is plenty of volleyball to go around local players with the CBVA putting on three tournaments for different age groups. The Premier Open offers a $1,000 prize purse in a men’s and women’s field on July 5. On July 11 and 12, age-group divided contests consist of over-37, over-45 and 50-plus fields. The 50 and over tournament holds true to the old-school style of sideout scoring.
