San Marcos set down on Senior Day

The San Marcos softball team honored its seniors on Thursday, paying homage to the seven players that will be moving on next season before and during a 7-0 loss to Ventura.

That the Royals were no-hit by the Cougars’ Elanna Palace didn’t diminish the contributions made by the seniors that made up half of this year’s squad.

San Marcos will lose four-year varsity players Emily Mason and Cady Haskell. Haskell finished off a Cal Ripken-like streak, having started every game during her career, a streak that reached 90 games.

Jessie Jimenez got the start behind the plate and shortstop Katelynn Kaufman caught a couple of innings behind the plate in her old position. Tara Crawford, Scarlett McIntosh and Annie Newberg fill out the class that were freshman during head coach Alex Sheldon’s first year as coach.

With few highlights at the plate, Sheldon credited Newberg with two defensive plays that saved runs. Playing in left field, Newberg threw out a runner at the plate and made another shoestring catch that surely saved a run.

The Royals end their 2009 campaign with a 6-15 overall record and finished tied for fourth in the Channel League.
