Coach Bob Bonning said that has Cate tennis team had two goals for this year’s regular season: win the Condor League and finish second in the Channel League.
The Rams aren’t actually a part of the Channel League, but they did play Santa Barbara, San Marcos and Dos Pueblos this year, defeating the Royals 15-3 on Friday at home.
They would have been second in that race if not for a nail-biting loss to the Chargers Tuesday, which DP won on games 75-72.
“We came up a little short on the Channel League goal, but we played 18 good sets of tennis today,” said Bonning, who specifically highlighted senior Geoffrey Mak, who bounced back from a couple of rough weeks to go 3-0 in singles on the day.
The Rams have three matches left before playoffs begin, so Bonning is still hesitant to talk about his team’s goals in the Division IV postseason bracket.
“I’ll talk to you next week,” he said.
Cate plays Laguna Blanca at the Municipal Courts at 2 p.m. Saturday.
