The effects of having to travel to Orange County to play on consecutive days in the Division IV CIF playoffs didn’t show for the Cate boys tennis team on Friday, as the Rams posted an equally commanding 15-3 victory over St. Margaret’s as their first round win on Thursday.
Both No. 1 positions dominated for Cate. Max Sabel swept his three sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 and the doubles duo of Wyatt Geiger and Blake Mackall breezed through three sets at 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.
“Coming out and playing strong tennis at No 1 singles and No. 1 doubles really does set the tone,” noted Cate head coach Bob Bonning, whose Rams jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first round of play on Friday.
With the win, Cate advances to the quarterfinals where it awaits the winner of Saturday’s contest between St. Joseph’s and Rowland.
