IRVINE — Barbara Nwaba finished third in the heptathlon at the Big West Multi-Event Championships, which concluded Saturday at Anteater Stadium at UC Irvine.
Nwaba’s day two marks were 16-3.75 (4.97m) in the long jump, 93-4 (28.46m) in the javelin and 2:25.35 in the 800 meter run. She finished with an even 5000 points, making this the second time she has broken the 5000 point barrier. She picks up six points which will be applied to the team scores in next weekend’s Big West Championship Meet.
Tayler Willams picked up a point for the Gauchos by finishing eighth with a score of 4487, which is a new personal best that moves her up to sixth on the UCSB all-time list.Maureen Ajoku also set a personal best with 4258 points, which was good for ninth in the meet.
Sherrina Lofton of Cal State Northridge was the winner of the heptathlon with 5224 points, with Shelese Ruffin of Northridge taking second with 5023.
The top UCSB finisher in the decathlon was Derek Masterson, who placed ninth with 5980 points. Mike Larocca was 10th with 5976, and Jacob Maus was 11th with 5946.
James Nunno of Cal Poly was the winner of the decathlon with 7208 points, his second Conference Title. Nunno previously won the decathlon in 2007. His teammate, Corbin Duer, placed second with 7135 points. Third place went to Robert Robinson of Cal State Northridge with 6830.
