A day after failing to complete a fair jump in the finals of the women’s long jump at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships, Kasey Kearin earned All-American honors with a fourth place finish in the triple jump.
“Kasey set a school record with a jump of 39’ 8.5” (12.10 meters),” said Westmont head coach Russel Smelley, “All six of her jumps were in the Westmont all-time top-ten.”
Kearin’s jump was 22 inches better than her previous personal best.
Lorin Milotta suffered a big disappointment in the women’s 100 meter hurdles. After posting the fastest time in the semifinals (14.1) on Friday morning, Milotta appeared to be positioned for a national championship run in the afternoon finals.
“Lorin got off to a strong start, but clipped the first hurdle with her heel,” said Smelley. “She fell to the ground in a heap. It was very disappointing for her and for us.”
Also enduring a disappointment was marathoner Lisa Griego. After leading for the first 19-20 miles, Griego began suffering from dehydration.
“I pulled her out of the race at about the 21.5 mile mark,” said Smelley. “She wanted to keep going because she had would have made the top six and earned All-American, but she was becoming delirious.”
In the semifinals of the women’s 5,000 meters, Chrissa Trudelle posted a time of 18:40.78 in a twenty-fourth place finish while Kaitlyn Dunn finished twenty-ninth with a time of 19:03. 84. Neither runner advanced to the finals.
The final men’s competitor at the national championships was Daniel Lew in the 5,000 meter racewalk. Lew posted a time of 27:51.59, finishing in twenty-first place.
