The UCSB women’s volleyball team will welcome two transfers to the 2009 roster it was announced this week by head coach Kathy Gregory. Quinn Williams, a 6-1 outside hitter, is transferring from Long Island University, while Chelsey Lowe, a 5-10 outside hitter, will come to UCSB from University of San Francisco.
Quinn Williams joins UCSB after spending one season at Long Island University. During her freshman season, Williams started 24 matches for the Blackbirds and finished the season third on the team in kills per set with an average of 2.25. She was also third on the team with her 0.62 blocks per set and she averaged 1.04 digs per set. She was named the North Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year after helping lead the Blackbirds to the NEC Championship.
Williams played prep volleyball at Palmdale High School and Monterey Trail High School. As a senior at Palmdale, she was named the Golden League’s Most Valuable Player. She also was the league’s Newcomer of the Year earlier in her career. On the club level, she played for Revolution Volleyball Club under coach Turhan Douglas.
“Quinn will give us a physical presence on the left side or possibly on the right,” Gregory said. “She is very athletic and will definitely improve our team in blocking. She had a great year as a freshman and we feel that she will be an impact player right away.”
Chelsey Lowe joins UCSB after spending a season at USF. During her freshman season, she played in 27 matches for the Dons and averaged 0.55 kills per set and 1.40 digs per set. She also earned scholar-athlete distinction at USF.
Lowe was a three-year letterwinner at Esperanza High School where she also earned three All-Sunset League honors, including first team honors as a senior. She helped Esperanza to the CIF Division I-AA Championship in 2005, the same season her team was a State Regional finalist. She also competed in track and field in the high jump, an event in which she took second in the Sunset League and qualified for the CIF Championships.
She competed with Long Beach Volleyball Club as well as Goldenwest Volleyball Club. She took second place at the Junior Olympics with the latter while also earning all-tournament honors.
“She will help us immediately in the libero position,” Gregory said of Lowe. “She has a great feel for the game and her passing and defense will be a great asset. Her outgoing personality and competitive nature will be a great addition.”
