The San Marcos volleyball team was missing six players for its most important match of the season, but pulled through nonetheless with a 19-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-19, 15-10 win over host Buena in Friday night’s one-match playoff for a spot in the postseason.
“Six players had to stay back due to the fire, but the others brought a little of the fire with them down to Buena,” said coach Roger Kuntz.
Neil Greene led the Royals with 15 kills and Jonathan Newton added 10 in the middle. Sophomore Jackson Kunz put down 12 kills and racked up seven aces, while Kuntz said he also got solid production out of senior setter Michael York and JV call-up Zach Yinger.
“We’re very excited to be able to represent the Channel League in the CIF playoffs,” said Kuntz, whose team finishes the regular season at 14-9 overall.
