Chargers deliver goods at prelims; Royals advance pair

Dos Pueblos’ boys relay teams turned heads and San Marcos advanced both boy and girl high jumpers in the Division II CIF Prelims held in Moorpark on Saturday.

The Chargers 4×400 relay team won its event by more than two seconds and the 4×100 quartet placed fifth.

San Marcos’ Bennie Kirkwood jumped 6-feet-4 for third place and teammate Hannah McDaniel leaped 5’4″ for sixth place.

Steven Scarvelis was a breath away from first place in the 300 hurdles, coming in second with a time of 38.73 seconds. Nick Scarvelis qualified for Saturday’s finals with a third-place heave of 174-09 in the discus and a fourth-place 57-foot throw in the shot put, and fellow sophomore Erin Ristig was the lone female qualifier for the Chargers, finishing fourth in the 400. Coach Dave Kuderka said that the sophomore-laden girls squad would undoubtedly send many more competitors next season.

Dos Pueblos sprinter Isaiha Brown is heading to Cerritos thanks to a sixth place performance in the 100 meter.

The Royals’ girls relay team did well in the 4×400, coming in 11th. While not moving on, head coach Marylin Hantgin thought it was a great race for seniors Kalley Ridgway and Danielle Gemberling to take a bow on. Eylsia Hodges, who PR’d in the 200 with a 25.90, and McDaniel combined on the relay.

None of Santa Barbara’s contingent advanced to Saturday’s finals.  Seniors Geena Boscacci, Freddy Maldonado and R.J. Bisquera will be missed by Dons head coach Olivia Perdices, having been the core of this year’s team.
