Castagnola allows just one hit against Royals

Andria Castagnola pitched a one-hitter and allowed just one unearned run, leading the Dos Pueblos softball team to a 4-1 win over visiting San Marcos Friday.

Jordan Roberts had two hits with two RBIs and Hannah Harris scored a pair of runs. Carina Amaro also nabbed a hit and an RBI for the Chargers (11-13, 5-4) who are guaranteed third place in the Channel League with second place still within reach.

“It was a good team win. San Marcos is a tough team,” said DP coach Donn Roberts.

Emily Mason pitched a 5-hitter for San Marcos (6-11, 2-6), but the Royals couldn’t cash in on a bases-loaded opportunity in the first to get things going. They also had the tying run at the plate in the seventh.

“Emily pitched a great game and she had all of her pitches working. It was an evenly matched game and we had our chances, but they just made more timely plays than us,” said Royals coach Alex Sheldon.

Kelly McKay scored the Royals’ only run after reaching on an illegal pitch and eventually scoring from second on a throwing error.

San Marcos will have to win at least three of its last four games, but Sheldon said he thinks his team is up for it.
