The Bishop Diego boys volleyball team had no choice but to play or the major upset on Tuesday, running into No. 1 Quartz Hill in the second round of the CIF Division IV playoffs on Tuesday.
The Cardinals may have been a bit too anxious, committing a dehabilitating 19 hitting errors in a 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 defeat.
“That’s the whole deal with the playoffs,” explained head coach Joe Reiken. “You can’t play with mistakes.”
Bishop was able to build an 18-14 lead in the second game before Quartz Hill dug in its heels to win 11-of-the-next-14 points to take the set.
“Defensively we were very good,” said Reiken, singling out his blockers.
Garrick Vanderfin recorded a team-high nine blocks to go with eight kills. Rey Nowak put down six kills and setter Sean McIver had 28 assists.
The Cardinals’ 2009 season hits the record books at 8-7.
