Baldwin Park bums out Warrior faithful

The Carpinteria baseball team’s season was decided on its last play, as a groundball scored the winning run for Baldwin Park in a 6-5 CIF Division IV Wildcard playoff on Tuesday.

The Braves needed two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Warriors, who wrapped up their season at 14-9.

Isacc Cervantes gave Carpinteria the lead with a 3-run blast off of Braves starting pitcher Gerardo Arias in the third inning. Cervantes made it 5-3 Warriors the next inning with an RBI single.

“We had good at-bats all day, we were a little more offensive,” Carpinteria head coach Pat Cooney said with a disclaimer. “However we left guys on base as well.”

Diego Carrillo had a team-high three hits while Trevor Madden and Kyle Geary, like Cervantes, had two hits apiece.

But too few of the Warriors’ hits came with runners in scoring position, as Cooney estimated at least 10 runners were left on base.

“They did give us a chance to win but they never went away,” he said.
