The Cate boys tennis team won its third straight CIF playoff match by identical 15-3 scores, this time ending Rowland’s season to reserve a spot in the Division IV semifinals.
No. 1 singles player Max Sabel and the No. 1 doubles team of Wyatt Geiger and Blake Mackall remained undefeated during the postseason, each having won nine straight sets.
Sabel was challenged, winning two of his sets by a single break. Geiger-Mackall, on the other hand, breezed 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 in theirs to lead Cate’s doubles side to a clean sweep. Connor Lemos and Gregory Mak also took three sets for the No. 2 Rams.
It is the third straight CIF semifinal for Cate, although the first as a Div. IV team. In 2007, the Rams won the Div. V title.
Cate must get past Laguna Beach to make it to the final, where the winner of Cerritos and Sage Hill will be waiting.
