Wastell, Curren’s Team Hosoi take early lead in Ultimate Boarder

When Ultimate Boarder shifts from Bear Mountain to Ventura’s C-Street on Wednesday, Kurt Wastell and legendary surfer Tom Curren will be wearing the “Blue Jersey” as leaders in the action sports triathlon-like competition after the snowboard leg was completed on Sunday.

The second leg of the snow-surf-skate contest is set to take place in Ventura all-day Wednesday starting at 8 a.m.  The competition, with over $58,000 in prize money, conculdes on Saturday with a skateboarding comp after which the “Ultimate Boarder” will be crowned.

Wastell, a pro snowboarder from Salt Lake City, Utah, is leading in the solo competition, followed by New Jersey’s Shane Pospisil and Dana Point’s Chad Shetler. Past icons Todd Richards and Omar Hassan slipped into the top-10 while defending champion Aaron Astorga is in good shape in 8th place.

Curren’s Team Hosoi stands in the lead of the team competition thanks to Bjorn Leines’ showing on the slopestyle course. Gregory Bokencamp put Team Val Surf in second and Tyler Flanagan’s ride was 3rd-place worthy.

Several Santa Barbara-area business combined talent to compete in the new team division introduced to this year’s event. Danny Thomas’ run positioned Santa Ynez’s One Way Boardshop’s team in fifth place and Goleta-based Trilogy Arts has a team featuring Christian Koch, Matt McCoy and Sean Key in eighth-place. Another Santa Barbara-based company, Bravo Condoms, is holding in ninth place.
