Ultimate Boarder surfing interrupted by winds

VENTURA – Tom Curren and Kurt Wastell will be wearing Ultimate Boarder’s blue jersey for at least one more day, as Wednesday’s surfing leg of the surf/skate/snowboarding competition was called off after the first round because of windy conditions.

High winds started whipping across the point at C-Street by mid-morning and by noon the call to postpone was made. The contest is set to wrap up on Thursday with heats hitting the water at 7:30 a.m.

Modeled after the Tour de France’s race-leading yellow jersey, Ultimate Boarder’s leader dons a blue jersey and Wastell currently holds the top spot in the solo division after Sunday’s snowboarding leg at Bear Mountain.

The blue jersey is likely to change hands, however, after Wastell posted a 36th-place worthy 3.13. Gabe Garcia graced the top spot after round 1 with a 17.9.

Curren, representing Team Hosoi in the team format, scored a two-wave mark of 14.33 in his first heat, good for third on the day. Aaron Cormican slotted a 15.09 for high-score and Cory Arrambide slipped in between Curren and Arrambide with a 14.49.

Other Santa Barbarans competing in the surfing portion as part of teams include Spencer Regan (9th), Parker Coffin (7.13) and Shaun Tomson (12th).

This year’s Ultimate Boarder is handing out over $58,000 in prize money, with $30,000 going to the solo division top-dog after Saturday’s skateboarding comp at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
