Sweeney’s day sweeter than Markowitz

 

SBCC’s Ryan Sweeney won a second-set tiebreaker on Thursday to reach the Round of 32 in the Community College men’s singles draw at the 109th Ojai Tennis Invitational. After a first-round bye, Sweeney beat Thomas Colbion of American River 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Sweeney will play 10th-seeded Thomas McGee of Ohlone on Friday morning at the Ojai Tennis Club. Teammate Elliot Markowitz lost to Mt. San Jacinto’s Bruno Reich 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

In doubles, Sweeney-Markowitz had a first-round bye, then dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision to Taavi Himmest-Troy Kellenberger of Fresno City. Alex Zazove-Zack Scott fell to Spencer Davidson-Stanislav Magarchenko 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a tight first-round match.
