Speier leads Cardinals to upset over Rodriguez

Trent Speier came on in relief in the second inning and led the Bishop Diego baseball team to a big win Wednesday at the Righetti Spring Classic. Speier, a junior, allowed just three hits as the Cardinals upset Rodriguez 10-7.

After a disappointing start to the season, Cardinals coach Brian Moulton said his team has been searching for win to rally off of.

“We’re going to try to rally this tournament into making a run in league. This is the best win any of these kids have had here at Bishop so I assume this fires them up,” said Moulton.

Speier walked two and struck out two, and he benefitted from what Moulton called the best defense his team has played all year.

“Speier was just a strike machine today. He doesn’t throw that hard, and they just couldn’t wait long enough on his pitches,” said the coach.

AJ Fling led the offense with a double and a homer on the day. Bishop Diego is 3-10 while Rodriguez is now 9-5.

  1. If Coach Moulton coaches like he played, the athletes in Santa Barbara would be wise to transfer schools. Keep it up Brian. I had a great time as your teamate in the Santa Barbara County vs Ventura County Allstar game in 73′. Your athletes and school are fortunate to have you.
