Shetler, Team Hosoi crowned “Ultimate Boarders”

Pro skateboarder Chad Shetler took over the title of Ultimate Boarder on Saturday, skating to a second-place finish in the third and final leg of week-long snow/surf/skate competition that wraps up in Ventura.

The second-year event, put on by Goleta-native Tim Hoover, added a team division in 2009 that allowed athletes to compete only in their areas of expertise, allowing for some star-studded competition.

Saturday’s skateboarding team finals featured legends Christian Hosoi and Steve Caballero and multi X-Games gold-medalist Andy MacDonald. Hosoi didn’t let down Team Hosoi teammates Bjorn Leines and Tom Curren, who had set the bar high by placing first in both snowboarding and surfing respectively. Hosoi finished second to MacDonald, with Caballero third, to make Team Hosoi the first Ultimate Boarder team champion.

While the team splits $8,000 for its title, Shetler earns $30,000 for his and in the process knocked last year’s champ Aaron Astorga from the throne.

Astorga didn’t go quietly, his third place finish in the skateboarding put him in the sixth spot, just off the podium. Omar Hassan, who topped Shetler and Astorga for the skateboarding crown, ended up in third overall with Kristian Phillip in second.

Gabe Garcia, who won the surfing leg at C-Street, and Kurt Wastell, who won the snowboarding comp at Bear Mountain, didn’t finish in the overall top-10.

Wastell did make Saturday’s finals, however, joining Santa Ynez’s Logan Preston, Kristian Phillip, Tosh Townend, Chris Kays, Toad Dintcho, Adam Taylor and the aforementioned three podium dwellers.
