Amanda Sharp’s RBI double in the sixth inning lifted SBCC over first-place Moorpark 3-2 in the first game of a WSC softball doubleheader on Thursday. The host Raiders won the second game 10-4.
Bryanna Monelo’s two-run double in the fifth gave the Vaqueros (10-21, 6-11) a 2-1 lead. Sharp’s run-scoring hit made it 3-1 and Moorpark (21-10, 13-4), the WSC Gold Division leader, tacked on another run in the seventh. Monelo held the WSC’s top offense (the Raiders were hitting .324) to just four hits.
Sonja Crawford went 2-for-3 for SBCC in the opener.
In the second game, Bianca Alvarez was 3-3. The Vaqueros tied the game 4-4 in the sixth on a double by Sara Gurchinoff, a single by Alvarez and an RBI single by Lauren Takayesu. Becky Abbott hit a long fly out to left but Alvarez left third base too early and was doubled up to end the threat.
Moorpark broke the game open with six runs in the sixth, scoring four unearned runs on three Vaquero errors.
“We’re glad to get the split,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We’re going to give the kids a few days off.”
SBCC returns to action on Thursday when it hosts L.A. Pierce for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
