SBCC golfers drop from first for first time

SBCC started a busy week with a forgettable round of golf on Monday in WSC No. 6 at Saticoy CC in Somis. The Vaqueros finished a season-low fifth in the eight-team event with a season-high 398 strokes.

Citrus won the meet at 383, followed by Canyons at 386. Canyons (36-6) took over sole possession of first place in the WSC for the first time this year, three games ahead of SBCC (33-9).

“The course took its toll on us and so did our opponents,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez, whose team is ranked No. 1 in Southern California. “We didn’t play very well. We’re in a little funk right now.”

Steve Whollery of Citrus was the medalist at 72. Andrew Perez led the Vaqueros with a 4-over 76 and Matt Siporin shot 77.

SBCC will play 72 holes in four days this week. On Wednesday, the Vaqueros will compete in the 36-hole Ventura Invitational, followed by WSC No. 7 on Thursday at Glendora CC.
