SBCC extends WSC lead with 382

Matt Siporin shot 73 and Albert Corral turned in a 74 Wednesday, guiding the SBCC men’s golf team to second place in WSC No. 9 at Robinson Ranch GC in Santa Clarita.

On a windy day, Bakersfield became the fifth school to finish first in a WSC meet this year with 374 strokes. The Vaqueros were second at 382, followed by Ventura (386), Citrus (388) and Canyons (399).

Santa Barbara (51-12) extended its lead atop the WSC to three games over Ventura (48-15) and five over Canyons (46-17). SBCC’s Andrew Perez, the medalist in the last two meets, shot 77 as did teammate Cameron Tennant.

Steve Whoolery of Citrus was the medalist at 67.

“The wind pushed the scores higher than usual,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “It was at least 35 mph and swirling too. Andrew didn’t have his best day but it was nice to see Albert shoot around par. Keeping it in the 70s today was pretty hard.

“I was proud of how we played. We came in with a better attitude and kept our focus.”

The WSC Championships will be held on April 27 at Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande. It’s a 36-hole event with each round counting as WSC No. 10 and 11. The top two teams, based on season records, will advance to the Southern Cal Regional, along with the third-best scoring team and top individuals from the final two rounds.
