Leanne Fretz and Annie Newberg each had two hits and San Marcos’ softball team led first-place Buena 2-1 after three innings, but things came unraveled down the stretch as the visiting Bulldogs picked up an 8-2 win Wednesday.
“I was pretty proud of how we played. They are very talented and very well-coached and I thought we competed well,” said Royals coach Alex Sheldon.
San Marcos fell victim to a two-out Buena rally in the fifth that broke the game wide open.
Newberg hit a line-drive single to start the bottom of the third, and two outs later Fretz hit an RBI double off the fence. Cady Haskell then drove in the Royals’ second run with a single.
San Marcos hosts Malibu on Friday.
