Royals take down Cougars in pitchers’ duel, 1-0

Sam Marshall pitched a complete-game two-hitter on a wet field Friday as the San Marcos baseball team scored in the top of the seventh to beat Ventura 1-0. The victory came just 24 hours after San Marcos lost to Santa Barbara in the bottom of the seventh.

“They were fired up and looking to end the week on a high note,” said coach Rob Crawford.

The Royals scored their run in almost the exact same fashion that the Dons did the day before. San Marcos loaded the bases with no out after a single by Brandon Atelian and sacrifice attempts that got through by Shane Wieland and Alex Price. Landon Boneck then hit a grounder to short to bring in Atelian for the day’s only run.

The Cougars almost got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but a textbook relay from Wieland to Nick Stathopoulos to catcher Riley Moore beat the runner to the plate.

Every team in the Channel League is now 2-2, making the forecast for the second half of the conference season very, very intriguing.

Ventura……..000 000 0 — 0  2  1

  1. Looks like mental toughness is a strong suit foe SM. Great to see. Way to finish the week. Any scouts looking at any players? Where are the area stats posted?
