Royals relinquish non-league match to Rams

Singles players Max Sabel and Geoffrey Mak locked down three sets each for the Cate boys tennis team, taking the Rams half-way to a 12-6 non-league victory at San Marcos on Friday.

The Royals fared better on the doubles side as the combos of Jackson Mann-Scott Messier and Stephen Amspoker-Nik Kilpelainen each grabbed a pair of sets, yet not enough to keep pace with the Rams.

The victory caps a big week for Cate, which moved up to Division IV this year. The Rams beat the division’s No. 10 and No. 8-ranked teams in Santa Ynez and Viewpoint before taking down the Channel League’s third-place team.

Mark Mullan and Rohit Goswamy was Cate’s most successful doubles team, winning two sets.

San Marcos faces Lompoc next while Cate has a Condor League game on Wednesday before Sabel and Wyatt Geiger head to compete in the Ojai Invitational over the weekend. Geoffrey Mak will be playing in singles.
