Royals pick up big personal-bests in loss to Chargers

Dos Pueblos’ girls swimmers defeated San Marcos 135-51 on Friday, but there were numerous standout performances for Brian Roth’s Royals on the day.

Emilia Wakamatsu swam personal bests en route to a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly and fourth-place in the 200 IM, with the medley time an improvement of three seconds from her previous best.

Autumn Lovett was San Marcos’ lone event winner, swimming her fastest time of the year, 1:07.98, in the 100 backstroke. The 4×50 relay team of Zoe Kirker, Parinda Sukavivatanachai, Jade Fitzgerald and Brittny Hummel swam a CIF consideration time of 1:47.97.

San Marcos also fell short on the boys side, but got great swims from some underclassmen.

Sophomore Kristian Sloan led the Royals’ 200 free relay team to its fastest time of the season (1:40.93) by dropping two seconds off of his PR (“a lifetime in the 50 free,” said coach Jeff Ashton).

Freshman Abel Frandsen continued his steady improvement by dropping 10 seconds off of his best in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 6:22.45. Classmate James Sweeney picked up his best time in the 100 backstroke, a mark of 1:12.95.

“He has been working really hard on improving his turns and coming off of the walls better. I was really happy to see that his hard work is paying off,” said Ashton.

Dos Pueblos’ sophomore boys ruled the day. Derek Shoemaker won the 200 and 500 freestyle, while Josh Pighetti took the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Christian Terpening won the 100 free and was 2nd in the 200 IM, and Kevin Cappon won the 100 fly.

The DP divers swept the event, led by Toby Reaper in 1st, Alfred Scott in 2nd, and Dewey Ledbetter in 3rd.
