Royals jammed by Buena, 5-2

The San Marcos baseball team couldn’t come up with the big inning on Friday afternoon and as a result couldn’t put together the rally needed in a 5-2 Channel League defeat to Buena.

The Royals staked the Bulldogs to a 5-0 lead after three innings but had plenty of chances to get back into the ballgame. San Marcos plated single runs in the fifth and seventh innings but couldn’t score in the fourth even though the bases were loaded with nobody out.

Of the 14 Royals who reached base, only Andy McCumber and Victor Acevedo were able to score.

Buena scored four runs in the third, sending nine batters to the plate.

Sam Marshall, who was coming off a two-hit shutout at Ventura, was chased after the third and Nick Stathopoulos came on to pitch four scoreless innings.

“Sam wasn’t quite himself today,” said San Marcos head coach Rob Crawford, whose No. 1 starter falls to 4-2 on the season.

The Royals, now 12-9 overall and 3-3 in league, will take their bye-week off and not return to the diamond until an April 28 Channel League game.
