Royals exit tangle with Cougars unscathed

San Marcos doubles teams won two first-round tiebreakers to put the Royals’ boys tennis team in charge en route to a 13-5 Channel League victory over Ventura on Thursday.

Doubles combos Jackson Foster and Parker Funk, and Mario Herrera and Garret Timmons, both playing together for the first time, put San Marcos up 5-1 early thanks to their tiebreak wins. Both teams won two sets on the day while No. 1 doubles Jackson Mann-Scott Messier swept three sets to give the Royals 7 of 9 doubles points.

San Marcos’ doubles teams are now 7-2 in tiebreakers on the season.

Sean-Michael Gaudefroy and Nik Kilpelainen grabbed two sets each on the singles side to help the Royals even their record at 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in league.

San Marcos faces three matches next week. A rescheduled match with Dos Pueblos comes on Monday before a league game with Buena and a non-league contest with Cate next Friday.
