Royal doubles sweep, Enholm mounts huge comeback

San Marcos’ boys tennis team swept its doubles sets 9-0 for the fifth time this year in a 17-1 demolition of lowly Buena on Thursday.

Mario Herrera and Garrett Timmons swept at 0-1-0 as the Royals dropped only eight games through all nine of the doubles sets.

“We’re hitting our first serve with confidence, attacking the net, returning with precision and hitting strong defensive lobs,” said coach Jarrod Bradley.

While the match was lopsided in the end, there was an absolutely epic set that took place between the top singles player from each team.

Travis Enholm saved three match points at 4-5, love-40 and stormed all the way back for a 7-5 win against top Bulldog Peter Prudhomme.

Enholm fell into the love-40 hole by double-faulting twice and hitting an error, but then had two aces and a volley winner to force deuce. He went on to win that game with an emphatic fist-pump before winning eight of the next 11 points to take the set.

“Despite being down and all but out, it was as though he just wouldn’t let himself lose,” said Bradley. “Though the match was well in hand, Travis played with a determination and perseverance that shows his continuing maturation on the court.”

Harrison Strober got in on the comeback party by rallying from a 2-5 deficit to beat Noah Killman 7-6 (7-0).

San Marcos (6-6, 3-3 Channel League) hosts Cate Friday at 3 p.m. Buena is now 1-9, 0-6.
