The Cate girls lacrosse team fought of a stiff challenge from Dunn in its Condor League opener on Wednesday, ultimately holding out for an 11-6 victory on the Rams’ field.
Cate’s leading scorer Tori Thompson was at it again, tallying five goals to lead all scorers. Cascade Zak and Stephanie Ruys de Perez added two each.
The Rams needed every point against the scrappy Earwigs, who sat back in a zone all day long to try and limit Cate’s scoring opportunities.
“They played a really nice zone and succeeded at it so we just had trouble playing our game,” explained Rams head coach Renee Mack, whose team is off to a 4-1 start.
“Their defense certainly surprised us, we weren’t really ready for it,” agreed Thompson, whose Rams converted on only 11-of-39 shots but still managed to jump out to a 9-3 halftime lead.
Senior Shelby Degroot took Dunn’s zone, a defense the Rams haven’t seen this year, in stride and posted two assists and a score.
“Shelby DeGroot had a brilliant game, her passing, her quick give-and-go, her vision on the field, I mean she was the playmaker on offense,” noted Mack.
