The Cate School girls lacrosse team polished off a third-place showing at the Western States Tournament last weekend by topping nemesis Foothill in the Rams’ fifth game of the day.
Foothill and Cate had split a pair of one-goal games previously this season and Saturday’s contest was more of the same. The only difference was that this time, instead of playing a traditional overtime period to decide the outcome, the tournament called for a unique way to settle a tie game.
Each team selects a field player to play with their goalie and the two sides play a two-on-two, full-field sudden death contest.
Cascade Zak, who totaled a team-high 19 goals in five games, came through for the Rams and found herself at the bottom of a dogpile as a result.
Tori Thompson reached double figures in scoring with 10 and also doled out seven assists.
Assistant coach Linda Sommers noted the Rams’ strong midfield play from Molly Sprague, Maddie Firestone and Brennan Cusack. Sommers estimated the middies ran 15-to-20 miles covering ground throughout the day.
Cate returns to Condor League play on Wednesday when they travel to Laguna Blanca.
